Abstract

In summer 2000, the Institute of Landscape and Plant Ecology (University of Hohenheim) launched together with different schools and the environmental office of the municipality of Ditzingen (near Stuttgart) a pilot project within the scope of the EuroBionet programme. Local air quality stations with bioindicator plants (tobacco, poplar, rye grass) were installed directly on the ground of six schools. Pupils and teachers played a decisive role in the environmental investigations. The local school teams were responsible for the maintenance of the plants and executed an injury assessment on ozone damages every two weeks.

In addition, the school project was accompanied by different communicative measures:

  • Reports in the local and regional press
  • Participation in the “European Car Free Day” in Ditzingen
  • Project T-shirts
  • Poster exhibitions at the schools

Through the active participation of the pupils in the scientific and communicative part of the environmental education project the knowledge transfer was strengthened and the pupils obtained a sustainable experience for their future environmental behaviour. On the other hand, researchers received information and feed-back on how to present scientific results and methods in a comprehensible and pleasant way for the public.
