Beschreibung

Between 1999 and 2002, EuroBionet established and operated local bioindicator networks totalling more than 100 monitoring stations in 12 European cities. At these stations, different bioindicator plants cultivated according to highly standardised procedures were exposed to ambient air in order to assess and to demonstrate the effects of ozone, sulphurous compounds, metals, hydrocarbons and mutagenic substances. The scientific investigations were accompanied by an intensive programme of public relations work and environmental education. Bioindicator plants proved to be an excellent tool for effect-related air quality monitoring and environmental education in urban areas.
