Abstract

Standardized ileal digestibilities of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) have been introduced widely to estimate the content of AA in feed ingredients fed to pigs. However, it is well acknowledged that feed ingredients for pigs, especially those that contain antinutritional factors, can induce specific ileal endogenous CP and AA losses far above basal ileal endogenous losses. If there is a metabolic cost to the animal associated with these specific ileal endogenous AA losses, then total ileal endogenous AA losses need to be quantified accurately. Until now, there are only few reports on total ileal endogenous losses and true ileal digestibilities (TID) of CP and AA in protein sources for pigs. Therefore, die present study was conducted to determine total and specific ileal endogenous losses of CP and AA in frequently used protein sources for pigs, such as soybean meal (SBM), rapeseed meal (RSM) and peas by means of the homoarginine method.
